History

Whitesburg was founded in 1832 by William White, a former slave who had purchased his freedom. He named the town after himself and it quickly became a thriving community. The town was incorporated in 1883 and was the first incorporated town in Carroll County.
Whitesburg was a major stop on the Atlanta and West Point Railroad, which ran from Atlanta to West Point, Georgia. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.
The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a cotton gin, a grist mill, a sawmill, and a blacksmith shop. The town also had a number of churches, including the First Baptist Church, which was founded in 1883.

The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.13.
