White Plains Summary

White Plains is a small town located in Greene County, Georgia, United States. It is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, approximately 30 miles northeast of Athens. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

White Plains was founded in 1820 by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was named after the white clay soil found in the area. The town was incorporated in 1825 and was the county seat of Greene County until 1873, when the county seat was moved to Greensboro.
White Plains was a major center of the cotton industry in the 19th century. The town was home to several cotton mills, including the White Plains Cotton Mill, which was established in 1845. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1891, but was rebuilt and continued to operate until the 1950s.

White Plains is located at 33°45'25" North, 83°14'17" West (33.756944, -83.238056). The town is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, approximately 30 miles northeast of Athens. The town is located on the banks of the Oconee River.

White Plains is a small, rural town with a population of 1,845. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 837.2 people per square mile. There were 817 housing units at an average density of 369.2 per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 17.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,945.
