West Point Summary

West Point, Georgia is a city located in Troup County, Georgia, United States. It is situated along the Chattahoochee River, approximately halfway between Atlanta and Montgomery, Alabama. The city is the county seat of Troup County and is part of the LaGrange, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 3,474.

History

West Point was founded in 1828 as a trading post and ferry crossing on the Chattahoochee River. The city was named after General James West, who served in the War of 1812. The city was incorporated in 1833 and became the county seat of Troup County in 1828.
During the Civil War, West Point was the site of a major battle in 1864. The Battle of West Point was fought between Union and Confederate forces and resulted in a Confederate victory.
In the late 19th century, West Point became an important industrial center. The city was home to several cotton mills, a paper mill, and a brick factory. The city also had a large railroad yard and was a major shipping point for cotton and other goods.

Geography

West Point is located at 33°6'25" North, 85°7'25" West (33.106944, -85.123611). The city is situated along the Chattahoochee River, approximately halfway between Atlanta and Montgomery, Alabama.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 3,474 people, 1,521 households, and 945 families residing in the city. The population density was 845.3 people per square mile (326.2/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 418.7 per square mile (161.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 63.2% White, 34.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
