Warrenton Summary
Warrenton is a city located in Warren County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,937 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Warren County.
History
The area that is now Warrenton was first settled in the early 1800s. The city was founded in 1810 and named after General Joseph Warren, a Revolutionary War hero. The city was incorporated in 1812.
During the Civil War, Warrenton was the site of a major battle between Union and Confederate forces. The Battle of Warrenton was fought on April 16, 1865, and resulted in a Confederate victory.
Geography
Warrenton is located at 33°20'25" North, 82°37'45" West (33.340278, -82.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Warrenton is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller businesses. The city also has a thriving tourism industry, with many visitors coming to the area to enjoy the city's historic sites and natural beauty.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,937 people, 745 households, and 498 families residing in the city. The population density was 876.2 people per square mile (338.3/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 368.2 per square mile (142.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.45% White, 40.45% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 20.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 83.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845.
