Tyrone Summary

Tyrone is a city located in Fayette County, Georgia, United States. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The population was 6,879 at the 2010 census, up from 6,217 at the 2000 census.

History

Tyrone was founded in 1891 by the Georgia General Assembly as the town of Shakerag. The town was named after the nearby Shakerag Indian village. The town was renamed Tyrone in 1895 after the Irish county of Tyrone. The town was incorporated in 1916.

Geography

Tyrone is located in central Fayette County at 33°31′N 84°31′W (33.5179, -84.5179). It is bordered to the north by Peachtree City, to the east by Fayetteville, to the south by Senoia, and to the west by Sharpsburg.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Tyrone has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2), or 1.17%, is water.

Economy

Tyrone is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Georgia-Pacific Corporation, the world's largest producer of tissue, pulp, paper, packaging, building products, and related chemicals.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 6,217 people, 2,521 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 764.2 people per square mile (295.2/km2). There were 2,637 housing units at an average density of 324.7 per square mile (125.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.45% White, 8.45% African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.45% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.45% of the population.
There were 2,521 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $54,917, and the median income for a family was $63,917. Males had a median income of $45,000 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,917. About 3.2% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
