Trenton was founded in 1836 and named after the city of Trenton, New Jersey. It was the first county seat of Dade County, which was created in 1837. The city was incorporated in 1845.

Trenton is located at 34°56'25" North, 85°20'17" West (34.940278, -85.338333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Trenton's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several large farms, including the Dade County Farm Bureau, which is the largest farm in the county. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,837 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 437.3 people per square mile (168.9/km2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 188.7 per square mile (72.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.45% White, 10.45% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,945.
