Rockmart Summary

Rockmart is a city located in Polk County, Georgia, United States. It is the county seat of Polk County. The population was 4,199 at the 2010 census. Rockmart is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, approximately 45 miles northwest of Atlanta.

History

Rockmart was founded in 1872 as a railroad town. The city was named after the nearby Rockmart Creek, which was named for the rocky shoals in the creek. The city was incorporated in 1874.
In the late 19th century, Rockmart was a major center for the production of cotton and woolen goods. The city was also home to several large manufacturing plants, including the Rockmart Manufacturing Company, which produced cotton and woolen goods, and the Rockmart Cotton Mill, which produced cotton yarn.
In the early 20th century, Rockmart was a major center for the production of marble and granite. Rockmart is located at 34°02′N 85°02′W (34.03, -85.03). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (2.17%) is water.

Economy

Rockmart's economy is largely based on manufacturing and agriculture. The city is home to several large manufacturing plants, including the Rockmart Manufacturing Company, which produces cotton and woolen goods, and the Rockmart Cotton Mill, which produces cotton yarn. The city is also home to several large agricultural operations, including poultry farms, cattle farms, and vegetable farms.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,199 people, 1,619 households, and 1,093 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,015.2 people per square mile (392.2/km2). There were 1,788 housing units at an average density of 431.2 per square mile (166.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 18.90% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
