Rochelle Summary

Rochelle is a small town located in Wilcox County, Georgia, United States. It is situated in the southeastern part of the state, about 50 miles south of Macon. The population of Rochelle was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Rochelle was founded in 1872 by the Georgia Railroad and Banking Company. The town was named after the daughter of the company's president, William E. Rochelle. The town was incorporated in 1873 and was the county seat of Wilcox County until 1912.

Geography

Rochelle is located at 31°45'25" North, 83°25'45" West (31.756944, -83.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Rochelle's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including a large poultry farm. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the town. The population density was 902.2 people per square mile (348.7/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 400.2 per square mile (154.4/km2).
