History
Patterson was founded in 1891 by the Georgia and Florida Railroad. The city was named after the railroad's president, William Patterson. The city was incorporated in 1895.

Patterson is located at 31°17'45" North, 82°17'45" West (31.295833, -82.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Patterson is largely based on agriculture and forestry. The city is home to several large farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The city also has a number of manufacturing and industrial businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 837.2 people per square mile (323.7/km2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 358.2 per square mile (138.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.45% White, 29.90% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.08% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.2 males.
