Odum Summary

Odum is a small city located in Wayne County, Georgia, United States. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the state, approximately 30 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The population of Odum was 1,093 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest incorporated city in Wayne County.

History

Odum was founded in 1891 by William Odum, a local farmer. The city was named after him and incorporated in 1901. The city was originally a small farming community, but it grew rapidly in the early 20th century due to the timber industry. The city was home to several sawmills and lumber companies, which provided employment for many of the city’s residents.
In the 1950s, Odum began to experience a decline in the timber industry, and the city’s population began to decline as well. In the late 1970s, the city began to experience a resurgence in population growth due to the growth of nearby cities such as Jesup and Waycross.

Geography

Odum is located at 31°45'25" North, 82°2'17" West (31.756944, -82.038333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Odum’s economy is largely based on agriculture and timber. The city is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The city is also home to a few manufacturing companies, such as a paper mill and a furniture factory.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the city. The population density was 908.3 people per square mile (351.2/km2). There were 498 housing units at an average density of 412.5 per square mile (159.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 17.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
