Oakwood Summary

Oakwood, Georgia is a small city located in Hall County, Georgia, United States. It is part of the Gainesville, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 2,530 at the 2010 census.

History

Oakwood was founded in 1881 by the Georgia Air Line Railroad. The town was named after the many oak trees in the area. The town was incorporated in 1891.

Geography

Oakwood is located at 34°17'25" North, 83°51'17" West (34.290278, -83.854722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

Oakwood is home to several businesses, including a manufacturing plant, a lumber yard, and a variety of retail stores. The city is also home to a number of small businesses, including a restaurant, a barber shop, and a beauty salon.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,530 people, 1,039 households, and 690 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,150.2 people per square mile (445.2/km2). There were 1,093 housing units at an average density of 493.2 per square mile (190.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
