History
The area that is now Lyons was first settled in the early 1800s. The city was founded in 1854 and named after a local family. The city was incorporated in 1856.
During the Civil War, Lyons was a major supply center for the Confederate Army. The city was the site of a major battle in 1864, when Union forces under General William T. Sherman attacked the city. The city was burned to the ground during the battle, but was quickly rebuilt after the war.
In the late 19th century, Lyons became a major center for the production of cotton and tobacco. The city was also home to several large sawmills and lumber companies.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,430 people, 2,093 households, and 1,395 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,053.3 people per square mile (406.9/km2). There were 2,310 housing units at an average density of 447.2 per square mile (172.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.45% White, 40.45% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 21.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.7 males.
