Lexington Summary

Lexington is a city located in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, United States. The population was 7,731 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Oglethorpe County.

Geography

Lexington is located at 33°45'25" North, 83°7'25" West (33.756944, -83.123611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2) is water.

History

Lexington was founded in 1806 as the county seat of Oglethorpe County. The city was named after the Battle of Lexington, which took place during the American Revolutionary War. The city was incorporated in 1811.
In the early 19th century, Lexington was a center of cotton production and processing. The city was also home to several cotton mills, which provided employment for many of the city's residents.

Economy

The economy of Lexington is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller businesses. The city is also home to several large retail stores, including Walmart, Lowe's, and Home Depot.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 7,731 people, 2,945 households, and 1,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,845.3 people per square mile (715.2/km2). There were 3,213 housing units at an average density of 772.3 per square mile (297.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 28.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 2,945 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,944, and the median income for a family was $40,938. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 13.2% of families and 16.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 14.2% of those age 65 or over.
