Lavonia Summary

Lavonia is a city located in Franklin County, Georgia, United States. It is the county seat of Franklin County and is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The population was 2,156 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Lavonia was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from North Carolina and Virginia. The town was originally known as "Franklin Courthouse" and was established in 1806. The town was renamed Lavonia in 1809 in honor of the wife of the first postmaster, Lavonia Smith.
The town was incorporated in 1871 and was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1864. The Battle of Lavonia was fought between Union and Confederate forces and resulted in a Confederate victory.

Geography

Lavonia is located at 34°19'25" North, 83°10'17" West (34.323750, -83.171417). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

Lavonia is a small town with a limited economy. The main industries in the area are agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 17.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
