Jonesboro Summary
Jonesboro, Georgia is a city located in Clayton County, Georgia, United States. It is the county seat of Clayton County and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The population was 4,724 at the 2010 census.
History
Jonesboro was founded in 1823 and named after the Revolutionary War hero, Major J. Jones. The city was incorporated in 1859 and was the site of the Battle of Jonesboro during the Civil War. The city was destroyed during the war, but was rebuilt and incorporated again in 1872.
Geography
Jonesboro is located in the south-central part of Clayton County at 33°30'N 84°21'W (33.50, -84.35). It is bordered to the north by the city of Morrow and to the south by the city of Riverdale. The city is located along Interstate 75, which runs north-south through the city.

Jonesboro is home to several large employers, including Clayton State University, Clayton County Public Schools, and the Clayton County Board of Education. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 4,724 people, 1,845 households, and 1,093 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,125.2 people per square mile (435.2/km2). There were 2,039 housing units at an average density of 487.2 per square mile (188.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 54.3% African American, 37.2% White, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.7% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.2% were married couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,958, and the median income for a family was $41,964. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $25,938 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 14.2% of families and 17.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
