Hephzibah Summary

Hephzibah is a small city located in Richmond County, Georgia, United States. It is part of the Augusta-Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 4,011 at the 2010 census.

History

Hephzibah was founded in 1836 by the Reverend William Bacon Stevens, a Presbyterian minister from Pennsylvania. He named the town after his wife, Hephzibah Jenkins, who was a member of the prominent Jenkins family of the area. The town was incorporated in 1879.
Hephzibah was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1864. The Battle of Hephzibah Church was fought on July 30, 1864, between Union and Confederate forces. The Union forces were victorious and the town was occupied by Union troops for the remainder of the war.

Geography

Hephzibah is located at 33°22′N 82°1′W (33.3667, -82.0167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Hephzibah is home to several businesses, including a number of small retail stores, restaurants, and service providers. The city is also home to a number of industrial and manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a plastics plant, and a metal fabrication plant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,011 people, 1,541 households, and 1,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 962.2 people per square mile (371.3/km2). There were 1,664 housing units at an average density of 400.2 per square mile (154.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.45% White, 28.90% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 1,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 20.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 25.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,917, and the median income for a family was $35,938. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,964 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,945. About 14.2% of families and 17.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.2% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over.
