Glenwood Summary

Glenwood is a small town located in Wheeler County, Georgia, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Oconee River, approximately 20 miles south of Macon. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Glenwood was founded in 1883 by the Georgia Railroad and Banking Company. The town was named after the Glenwood Plantation, which was owned by the railroad company. The plantation was named after the Glenwood Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia. The town was incorporated in 1887.

Geography

Glenwood is located at 32°45'25" North, 83°17'45" West (32.756944, -83.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Glenwood is largely based on agriculture and forestry. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. The town also has a post office and a library.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 397.3 per square mile (153.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.90% White, 18.90% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $27,500, and the median income for a family was $32,500. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,945.
