Gay, Georgia is a small town located in Meriwether County, Georgia. It is situated about 50 miles south of Atlanta and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1871 and was named after William Gay, a prominent local landowner. As of the 2010 census, the population of Gay was 545.

Geography

Gay is located at 33°25'25"N 84°25'45"W (33.423, -84.429). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Gay is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a poultry farm, and a beef cattle farm. The town also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a grocery store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 145 families residing in the town. The population density was 776.4 people per square mile (300.2/km2). There were 226 housing units at an average density of 322.9 per square mile (124.5/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.3% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were married couples living together, 13.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
