Doerun Summary

Doerun is a small town located in Colquitt County, Georgia, United States. It is situated in the southwestern part of the state, about 20 miles south of Albany and about 30 miles north of Valdosta. The population of Doerun was 1,072 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Doerun is located at 31°17'25" North, 83°59'45" West (31.290278, -83.995833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

History

Doerun was founded in 1891 by the Doerun Land Company. The town was named after the Doerun family, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was incorporated in 1895.
Doerun was a thriving agricultural community in the early 20th century. The town was home to several cotton gins, a sawmill, and a grist mill. The town also had a hotel, a bank, and a post office.

Economy

Doerun’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce cotton, peanuts, corn, and soybeans. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,072 people, 431 households, and 287 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.2 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 405.8 per square mile (156.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 68.2% White, 28.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races.
