Collins Summary

Collins is a city located in Tattnall County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tattnall County.

History

The area that is now Collins was first settled in the early 1800s. The city was named after a local family, the Collinses. The city was incorporated in 1891.
In the late 1800s, Collins was a major center for the turpentine industry. The city was also home to a large sawmill and a cotton gin.

Geography

Collins is located at 31°51'25" North, 82°2'25" West (31.856944, -82.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

Collins is a small rural town with a limited economy. The main industries in the area are agriculture and timber. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 837.2 people per square mile (323.7/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 369.2 per square mile (142.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.45% White, 29.90% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.08% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 18.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
