Carnesville Summary

Carnesville is a small town located in Franklin County, Georgia, United States. It is situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, approximately 50 miles northeast of Atlanta. The town was founded in 1820 and is the county seat of Franklin County. As of the 2010 census, the population of Carnesville was 1,619.

History

Carnesville was founded in 1820 by William Carnes, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named after him and was originally known as Carnesville Station. The town was incorporated in 1821 and was the first county seat of Franklin County.
In the early 19th century, Carnesville was a major stop on the stagecoach route between Athens and Elberton. The town was also a major trading center for the surrounding area.
