Grady County Summary

Grady County is located in the southwestern part of the state of Georgia, in the United States. It is bordered by Thomas County to the north, Decatur County to the east, Mitchell County to the south, and Colquitt County to the west. The county seat is Cairo, and the county has a total area of 441 square miles.

History

Grady County was created in 1906 from parts of Decatur and Thomas counties. It was named for Henry W. Grady, a prominent journalist and orator from Atlanta. The county was largely rural until the 1950s, when the construction of the Jim Woodruff Dam on the Chattahoochee River brought an influx of people and industry. The dam created Lake Seminole, which is now a popular recreational area.

Geography

Grady County is located in the southwestern part of the state of Georgia. It is bordered by Thomas County to the north, Decatur County to the east, Mitchell County to the south, and Colquitt County to the west. The county has a total area of 441 square miles, of which 437 square miles is land and 4 square miles is water. The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern part. The Chattahoochee River forms the western border of the county, and Lake Seminole is located in the southeastern corner.

Economy

Grady County’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The county is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller agricultural operations. The county also has a growing tourism industry, with Lake Seminole being a popular destination for fishing, boating, and other outdoor activities.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, Grady County had a population of 25,011. The population was 54.2% White, 39.3% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.2% of the population.
The median income for a household in the county was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $43,945. The per capita income for the county was $17,845. About 17.2% of families and 21.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
