Buchanan was founded in 1856 and named after James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States. The city was incorporated in 1872.

The economy of Buchanan is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several manufacturing plants, including a poultry processing plant, a paper mill, and a furniture factory.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 837.2 people per square mile (323.7/km2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 358.3 per square mile (138.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.90% White, 10.45% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.08% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
