Bremen is a city located in Haralson County, Georgia, United States. It is the county seat of Haralson County and is located in the northwest corner of the state. The population was 4,945 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Bremen is located at 33°45′N 85°7′W (33.75, -85.12). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2) (0.48%) is water.
History
Bremen was founded in 1854 and named after the German city of Bremen. The city was incorporated in 1871. The city was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1864.
Economy
Bremen is home to several industries, including a large poultry processing plant, a paper mill, and a manufacturing plant. The city also has a number of retail stores and restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,845 people, 1,845 households, and 1,269 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,154.2 people per square mile (446.7/km2). There were 1,976 housing units at an average density of 467.2 per square mile (180.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 17.90% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.45% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
