Baldwin is a city located in the state of Georgia, United States. It is the county seat of Banks County and is part of the Gainesville, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Baldwin was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Baldwin was first settled in the early 1800s. The city was originally known as Maysville, and was later renamed Baldwin in honor of Abraham Baldwin, a signer of the United States Constitution. The city was incorporated in 1891.
Geography
Baldwin is located at 34°25'25" North, 83°37'17" West (34.423750, -83.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Economy
Baldwin is home to several businesses, including a lumber mill, a furniture factory, and a poultry processing plant. The city is also home to several retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 837.2 people per square mile (323.7/km2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 358.2 per square mile (138.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.45% White, 17.90% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.20% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.20% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $33,750. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845.
