Woods Cross Summary

Woods Cross is a city located in Davis County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Ogden-Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,776 at the 2010 census, up from 5,159 in 2000.

History

Woods Cross was first settled in 1848 by a group of Mormon pioneers led by John Smith. The settlement was originally known as Bountiful North, but was later renamed Woods Cross in 1868 after a nearby crossing of the Union Pacific Railroad. The city was incorporated in 1935.

Geography

Woods Cross is located at 41°9'25" North, 111°56'45" West (41.156944, -111.945556). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Woods Cross is home to several large employers, including the Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation, the largest copper mine in the United States. Other major employers include the Utah Department of Transportation, the Davis School District, and the Utah State University Extension Office.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,159 people, 1,717 households, and 1,427 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,202.2 people per square mile (463.7/km2). There were 1,817 housing units at an average density of 422.2 per square mile (162.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 91.17% White, 0.45% African American, 0.45% Native American, 1.45% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 4.45% from other races, and 1.82% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.45% of the population.
There were 1,717 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.7% were non-families. 16.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.99 and the average family size was 3.37.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 32.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $54,917, and the median income for a family was $59,917. Males had a median income of $41,917 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,917. About 3.2% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
