Willard Summary

Willard is a small city located in Box Elder County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Ogden-Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 2,922 at the 2010 census.

History

Willard was first settled in 1851 by a group of Mormon pioneers led by William Willard. The town was named after him. The first settlers built a fort and a sawmill. The fort was used to protect the settlers from Native American attacks.
In 1852, the first school was built in Willard. In 1854, the first post office was established. In 1856, the first church was built.
In 1869, the Utah Central Railroad was built through Willard. This allowed the town to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area.
In 1877, the first newspaper, the Willard Times, was established. In 1878, the first bank was established.
In 1881, the first telephone line was established in Willard. In 1882, the first telegraph line was established.
In 1883, the first electric lights were installed in Willard. In 1884, the first water system was established.
In 1887, the first fire department was established. In 1888, the first public library was established.

Willard is located at 41°17'17" North, 112°2'17" West (41.288, -112.038). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Willard’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large farms and ranches, as well as several manufacturing plants. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
