Syracuse Summary

Syracuse is a city located in Davis County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Ogden-Clearfield, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 25,514 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-largest city in Utah.

History

Syracuse was first settled in 1849 by a group of Mormon pioneers led by William Miller. The city was named after Syracuse, New York, the hometown of one of the settlers. The city was incorporated in 1935.

Geography

Syracuse is located at 41°06′N 112°02′W (41.10, -112.03). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.3 square miles (29.3 km2), all land.

Economy

Syracuse is home to several large employers, including Hill Air Force Base, ATK Thiokol, and the Davis Applied Technology College. The city also has a thriving retail sector, with several large shopping centers and numerous restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 25,514 people, 8,845 households, and 6,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,248.3 people per square mile (868.2/km2). There were 9,541 housing units at an average density of 845.2 per square mile (326.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 3.7% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% were non-families. 17.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.25.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $63,945, and the median income for a family was $68,945. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $32,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
