Portage Summary
Portage is a small town located in Box Elder County, Utah, United States. It is situated on the western edge of the Great Salt Lake, approximately 20 miles northwest of Brigham City. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census.
History
Portage was first settled in 1864 by a group of Mormon pioneers led by William H. Hooper. The town was originally named Hooper's Portage, after the leader of the group. The name was later changed to Portage, after the nearby portage between the Great Salt Lake and the Bear River.
The town was incorporated in 1891 and has remained a small, rural community ever since. The town was home to a number of businesses, including a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a post office.
Geography
Portage is located at 41°25'17" North, 112°14'17" West (41.4214, -112.2381). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Portage is a small, rural community with a limited economy. The town is home to a few small businesses, including a gas station, a convenience store, and a restaurant. The town is also home to a number of farms and ranches, which provide employment for many of the town's residents.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,072 people, 393 households, and 294 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 431 housing units at an average density of 614.2 per square mile (236.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 393 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 29.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
