Mapleton Summary
Mapleton is a city located in Utah County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Provo-Orem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,936 at the 2010 census.
History
Mapleton was first settled in 1859 by a group of Mormon pioneers led by John H. Tippets. The settlers named the area after the nearby Maple Creek. The area was originally part of Springville, but was incorporated as its own town in 1867.
Geography
Mapleton is located at 40°2'17" North, 111°45'17" West (40.038, -111.755). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of it land.
Economy
Mapleton's economy is largely based on agriculture and light manufacturing. The city is home to several small businesses, including a furniture store, a bakery, and a grocery store. The city also has a number of restaurants, including a Mexican restaurant, a Chinese restaurant, and a pizza parlor.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,936 people, 2,845 households, and 2,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,133.3 people per square mile (822.3/km²). There were 2,945 housing units at an average density of 699.3 per square mile (270.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.90% White, 0.17% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.90% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.45% of the population.
There were 2,845 households out of which 51.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 15.7% were non-families. 12.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.14 and the average family size was 3.43.
In the city, the population was spread out with 34.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $54,917, and the median income for a family was $58,917. Males had a median income of $41,917 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,917. About 3.2% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
