Hyrum Summary

Hyrum is a city located in Cache County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Logan, Utah-Idaho Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 7,609 at the 2010 census, with an estimated population of 8,845 in 2018.

Geography

Hyrum is located at 41°45'17" North, 111°50'45" West (41.754722, -111.845833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), all land.

History

Hyrum was first settled in 1859 by a group of Mormon pioneers led by Hyrum Smith, the brother of Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement. The city was named after Hyrum Smith.
The city was incorporated in 1867 and has grown steadily since then. In the early 1900s, Hyrum was a major stop on the Oregon Short Line Railroad. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the city.

Economy

Hyrum's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural operations, including a large dairy farm and a large potato farm.
The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a large plastics manufacturer and a large metal fabrication company.

As of the census of 2010, there were 7,609 people, 2,541 households, and 1,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,764.3 people per square mile (683.2/km2). There were 2,717 housing units at an average density of 627.3 per square mile (242.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 93.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.3% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.2% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.99 and the average family size was 3.45.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 30.7% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $51,944. Males had a median income of $37,917 versus $25,917 for females.
