History

Somerville was founded in 1824 and named after Thomas Somerville, a local landowner. The town was incorporated in 1837 and became the county seat of Fayette County in 1838.
The town was a major center of activity during the Civil War. It was the site of a major battle in 1863, and the town was occupied by Union forces in 1864. After the war, the town was rebuilt and continued to grow.

Somerville is located at 35°14'25"N 89°30'45"W (35.240278, -89.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Somerville's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several large farms, as well as several small businesses. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing plants, including a paper mill and a furniture factory.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,094 people, 845 households, and 563 families residing in the town. The population density was 945.2 people per square mile (364.7/km2).
