History
Wathena was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Chief Wathena, a Potawatomi chief who had signed a treaty with the United States in 1846. The town was incorporated in 1857.
In the late 19th century, Wathena was a thriving river port, with steamboats regularly stopping at the town's wharf. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a brickyard, and a brewery.
Geography
Wathena is located at 39°45'45" North, 94°59'45" West (39.7625, -94.9958). The town is situated along the Missouri River, and is part of the St. Joseph, Missouri metropolitan area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Wathena's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to a number of farms, as well as a number of businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,717 people, 690 households, and 463 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,427.5 people per square mile (550.3/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 621.7 per square mile (239.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.5% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
