Wathena Summary

Wathena, Kansas is a small town located in Doniphan County, in the northeastern corner of the state. It is situated along the Missouri River, and is part of the St. Joseph, Missouri metropolitan area. The population of Wathena was 1,717 at the 2010 census.

History

Wathena was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Chief Wathena, a Potawatomi chief who had signed a treaty with the United States in 1846. The town was incorporated in 1857.
In the late 19th century, Wathena was a thriving river port, with steamboats regularly stopping at the town's wharf. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a brickyard, and a brewery.

Geography

Wathena is located at 39°45'45" North, 94°59'45" West (39.7625, -94.9958). The town is situated along the Missouri River, and is part of the St. Joseph, Missouri metropolitan area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Wathena's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to a number of farms, as well as a number of businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,717 people, 690 households, and 463 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,427.5 people per square mile (550.3/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 621.7 per square mile (239.7/km2).
