Troy Summary

Troy is a small city located in Doniphan County, Kansas, United States. It is situated along the Missouri River, approximately 10 miles south of the Nebraska border. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Troy was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Troy, Ohio. The town was named after the Ohio city, and was the first settlement in Doniphan County. The first post office was established in 1855.
Troy was a stop on the Pony Express route from 1860 to 1861. During the Civil War, the town was a major supply center for Union troops.

Geography

Troy is located at 39°45'25" North, 95°2'25" West (39.756944, -95.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Troy is a small rural community with a diverse economy. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bank. The city also has a small industrial park, which is home to several manufacturing companies.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 681.3 per square mile (263.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
