Shawnee, Kansas is a city located in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area and is located just west of the Missouri border. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 62,209.
History
The area that is now Shawnee was originally inhabited by the Kansa Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1830s. The town was founded in 1857 and was named after the Shawnee tribe. The town was incorporated in 1868.
In the late 19th century, Shawnee was a popular destination for settlers from the eastern United States. The town was known for its many churches and its temperance movement.
