Prairie Village Summary

Prairie Village is a city located in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. It is a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, and is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 21,447.

History

Prairie Village was founded in 1949 by J.C. Nichols, a prominent Kansas City developer. Nichols had previously developed the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri, and wanted to create a similar development in the Kansas suburbs. He purchased 1,400 acres of land in Johnson County and began developing the area. The first homes were built in 1950, and the city was officially incorporated in 1951.

Geography

Prairie Village is located at 38°58'25"N 94°37'17"W (38.973611, -94.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.7 square miles (12.2 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Prairie Village is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several corporate headquarters, including AMC Theatres, Dairy Farmers of America, and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 21,447 people, 8,945 households, and 5,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,541.3 people per square mile (1,753.7/km2). There were 9,521 housing units at an average density of 2,026.2 per square mile (781.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 5.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 8,945 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 28.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $76,837, and the median income for a family was $95,945. Males had a median income of $63,958 versus $45,821 for females. The per capita income for the city was $41,945. About 2.2% of families and 3.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 3.2% of those age 65 or over.
