History

Osawatomie was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio, led by Reverend John T. Barton. The settlers were looking for a place to establish a new town and chose the site of an old Osage Indian village. The town was named after the Osage Nation, who had a village nearby.
In 1855, the town was incorporated and the first post office was established. The town quickly grew and by 1860, it had a population of over 1,000.
During the Civil War, Osawatomie was a major center of activity for the Union Army. In August of 1863, the Battle of Osawatomie was fought in the town. The Union forces were led by General James Blunt and the Confederate forces were led by General Sterling Price. The Union forces were victorious and the Confederate forces retreated.
In 1867, the first railroad line was built through Osawatomie, connecting it to Kansas City. This allowed the town to become a major shipping center for the region.
In 1881, the town was devastated by a tornado. The tornado destroyed much of the town, including the courthouse and many homes.
In the early 1900s, Osawatomie became a major center for the manufacture of farm equipment. The town was home to several factories, including the Osawatomie Plow Company, the Osawatomie Harvester Company, and the Osawatomie Foundry.

There were 1,717 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
