Whitten Summary

Whitten is a city located in Franklin County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Whitten was founded in 1881 by William Whitten, a local farmer. The town was originally called Whittenburg, but the name was changed to Whitten in 1883. The town was incorporated in 1887.

The economy of Whitten is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the city. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.1% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older.
