West Union was founded in 1851 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The city was named after Union Township, which was named after the Union Church that was located in the area. The city was incorporated in 1856.
West Union was the site of the first county courthouse in Fayette County. The courthouse was built in 1856 and is still in use today.

The city was also the site of the first public school in the county which was established in 1857

Geography

West Union is located at 42°55′N 91°51′W (42.914, -91.851). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

West Union is a small rural community with a diverse economy. The city is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries.
The city is also home to several large employers, including the West Union Community School District, Fayette County Hospital, and the West Union Public Library.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,288.6 people per square mile (496.7/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 527.3 per square mile (203.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
