History
West Point was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the nearby West Point Military Academy in New York. The first post office was established in 1838.
In 1839, the first school was built in West Point. The first church was built in 1841. The first newspaper, the West Point Gazette, was established in 1845.
In 1851, the first railroad line was built through West Point. This allowed the town to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area.
