Wapello Summary

Wapello is a city located in Louisa County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,741 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Louisa County.

Geography

Wapello is located at 41 7 17 N 91 20 17 W 41 121400 91 338100

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.90 square miles (4.93 km2), all of it land.

History

Wapello was founded in 1837 and named after Chief Wapello of the Meskwaki tribe. The city was incorporated in 1851.
The first courthouse in Wapello was built in 1839 and was replaced by a larger building in 1867. The current courthouse was built in 1891 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Economy

The economy of Wapello is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including Wapello Manufacturing, which produces agricultural equipment, and Wapello Industries, which produces automotive parts.
