Wapello Summary

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.90 square miles (4.93 km2), all of it land.
History
Wapello was founded in 1837 and named after Chief Wapello of the Meskwaki tribe. The city was incorporated in 1851.
The first courthouse in Wapello was built in 1839 and was replaced by a larger building in 1867. The current courthouse was built in 1891 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Economy
The economy of Wapello is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including Wapello Manufacturing, which produces agricultural equipment, and Wapello Industries, which produces automotive parts.
The city is also home to several retail stores, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Dollar General, and a Family Dollar.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,741 people, 1,093 households, and 690 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,443.2 people per square mile (556.7/km2). There were 1,193 housing units at an average density of 627.9 per square mile (242.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,944, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
