Traer Summary

Traer is a small town located in Tama County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,039 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Waterloo–Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The town of Traer was founded in 1855 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the Traer family, who were among the first settlers. The town was incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Traer was a major center for coal mining. The town was home to several coal mines, including the Traer Coal Company, which operated from 1883 to 1895. The town also had a number of other industries, including a brickyard, a flour mill, and a creamery.

Geography

Traer is located at 42°14′17″N 92°25′17″W (42.238, -92.421). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.02 square miles (2.64 km2), all of it land.
