Traer Summary

History
The town of Traer was founded in 1855 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the Traer family, who were among the first settlers. The town was incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Traer was a major center for coal mining. The town was home to several coal mines, including the Traer Coal Company, which operated from 1883 to 1895. The town also had a number of other industries, including a brickyard, a flour mill, and a creamery.
Geography
Traer is located at 42°14′17″N 92°25′17″W (42.238, -92.421). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.02 square miles (2.64 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Traer is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The town also has a number of manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory and a metal fabrication plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,039 people, 441 households, and 279 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,019.6 people per square mile (393.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 462.7 per square mile (179.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
