Tipton Summary

Tipton is a city located in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. It is the county seat of Cedar County and is located along the Cedar River. The population was 3,976 at the 2010 census.

History

Tipton was founded in 1855 by a group of settlers from Tipton County, Tennessee. The town was named after the county in Tennessee. The first post office was established in 1856. The first school was built in 1858. The first newspaper, the Tipton Advertiser, was established in 1859.
Tipton was incorporated as a city in 1872. The first mayor was William H. Tipton, who served from 1872 to 1876.

Economy

Tipton's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several large farms, including the Tipton Family Farm, which is one of the largest in the state. The city also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and several restaurants.
