History

Tiffin was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Tiffin, Ohio. The town was named after the Ohio city, and the first post office was established in 1855. The town was incorporated in 1876.
Tiffin was a major stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, and the town grew rapidly in the late 19th century. The town was home to a number of businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, a brickyard, and a furniture factory.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.06.
