Swisher Summary

Swisher is a city located in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. It is part of the Iowa City, IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,039 at the 2010 census.

History

Swisher was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after a local farmer, John Swisher, who donated the land for the town. The first post office was established in 1872.

In 1875 the first school was built in Swisher The town was incorporated in 1876

In the early 1900s, Swisher was a thriving agricultural community. The town had a general store, a blacksmith shop, a creamery, a bank, and a hotel.
