Sully Summary

Sully is a small city located in Jasper County, Iowa, United States. It is situated in the south-central part of the state, approximately 30 miles east of Des Moines. The city has a population of 1,093 as of the 2010 census, making it the smallest incorporated city in Jasper County.

History

Sully was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from the Netherlands. The city was named after the Dutch explorer, Abel Sully, who explored the area in the late 1600s. The city was incorporated in 1876 and has remained a small, rural community ever since.

Geography

Sully is located at 41°37'25" North, 93°14'45" West (41.623607, -93.245945). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Sully is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The city also has a few manufacturing plants, including a factory that produces farm equipment.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,817.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
