Stout Summary

Stout is a small city located in Chickasaw County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Cedar River, approximately 10 miles south of New Hampton. The population of Stout was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Stout was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the first settler, John Stout. The first post office was established in 1857. The town was incorporated in 1876.
Stout was a thriving agricultural community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The town also had a school, a church, and a hotel.
In the early 20th century, the town began to decline as the railroad bypassed it. The population decreased and many of the businesses closed. In the 1950s, the town was revitalized with the construction of a new school and the opening of a new grocery store.

Geography

Stout is located at 42°45'25" North, 92°17'45" West (42.756944, -92.295833). The town is situated along the Cedar River, approximately 10 miles south of New Hampton.
The terrain around Stout is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The town is located in the Driftless Area, a region of the Midwest that was not glaciated during the last ice age.

Stout's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and other crops. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
