Stockport Summary

Stockport, Iowa is a small town located in Van Buren County, Iowa. It is situated on the banks of the Des Moines River, approximately 20 miles south of the state capital of Des Moines. The town was founded in 1837 and has a population of approximately 500 people.

History

Stockport was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Stockport, Ohio, the hometown of the settlers. The town was originally a trading post and a ferry crossing on the Des Moines River. In 1845, the first post office was established in Stockport.
In 1851, the first school was built in Stockport. The school was a one-room schoolhouse and was used until the early 1900s. In 1854, the first church was built in Stockport. The church was a Methodist church and is still in use today.
In 1856, the first bridge was built across the Des Moines River. The bridge was a wooden bridge and was replaced in 1887 with a steel bridge. The bridge is still in use today.
In 1887, the first railroad was built in Stockport. The railroad was used to transport goods and passengers to and from Stockport. The railroad is still in use today.
In the early 1900s, Stockport began to grow and prosper. The town had a variety of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a livery stable.
