State Center Summary

State Center is a city located in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County.

History

State Center was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the nearby State Center Creek. The first post office was established in 1857. The town was incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, State Center was a major railroad hub, with the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (the Milwaukee Road) running through the town. The Milwaukee Road was the first railroad to reach State Center, and it was instrumental in the town's growth.

State Center's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant.
