South English is a small town located in Keokuk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 517 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Iowa City, IA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

History

South English was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from England. The town was named after the English settlers who founded it. The first post office was established in 1855.

The town was incorporated in 1876

Economy

The economy of South English is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a grain farm.
The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 517 people, 212 households, and 145 families residing in the town. The population density was 862.5 people per square mile (333.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.8% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
